Politics and politicians in the „Głos Kobiet” [„The Voice of Women”], women’s magazine published in the years 1908–1939

„Głos Kobiet” [„The Voice of Women”] was a magazine published between 1908 and 1939 by the Central Women’s Division of the Polish Socialist Party (PPS). The publication was addressed to women. It was edited by PPS activists Zofia Praussowa and Władysława Weychert-Szymanowska. The magazine aimed to encourage women to join the socialist movement with a view to expanding the party’s membership and helping women to make informed decisions on joining the struggle for equality. „Głos Kobiet” dealt primarily with working-class issues. The magazine ran regular articles on politics, both domestic and foreign. One of the central subjects of criticism in these articles was the capitalist system, which was described as being inherently corrupt and designed to protect only the owning classes. „Głos Kobiet” also featured articles on women’s organisations in Poland and Europe, advocating women’s economic equality. Particularly extensive coverage was given to the May Coup d’État of 1926. The magazine deplored the fact that the living conditions of the working class had not improved, and criticised the authoritarian rule of Józef Piłsudski, as well as the overall political situation in Poland. Extensive coverage was given to the Brest trials, condemning the incarceration of political-opposition politicians in Brest, and describing it as utterly disgraceful. From 1933 on, „Głos Kobiet” started featuring more articles condemning fascism, anti-Semitism and the policies of totalitarian states. The magazine depicted Adolf Hitler as the main threat to global peace, and exposed the murderous policies of Joseph Stalin.
